Immigration and Teachers

Last week, my hometown along with many others had a “Day Without Immigrants” march. I was extremely surprised to see so many parents and children miss school and work to prove that they are more than just immigrants. They are human beings who shouldn’t live in constant fear of being deported or separated from their loved ones in the U.S. However, many people had an opposite opinion. Teachers and staff were reported saying that their classrooms ran smoothly without their immigrant students. Teachers are supposed to provide a safe environment for their students. They are supposed to encourage and support their students not talk down on them for simply pursuing a better live in the United States. It sickens me to think that some teachers can act this way towards students who probably looked up to them. Not only did these teachers lose respect from many people but they lost the respect of students who did absolutely nothing to them. They wanted to prove that this march was “stupid” but instead they made a fool out of themselves. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but teachers have to be more aware of the things they post online and during school hours. Some people don’t understand how much it hurts to risk their lives to come to the United States for a better life and have it taken away from them in a matter of seconds. Yes, they can get papers but if you don’t personally understand the process of getting papers, then you don’t understand how hard and long it can take. Not all undocumented immigrants are criminals!!! They can be mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles but in a matter of seconds they can be separated from the ones they loved the most.
